{"id":790,"date":"2021-07-23T16:30:56","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T13:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dukva.org\/en\/?p=790"},"modified":"2021-07-23T16:30:57","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T13:30:57","slug":"uk-parliamentary-committee-puts-out-uyghur-language-report-on-abuses-in-xinjiang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dukva.org\/en\/uk-parliamentary-committee-puts-out-uyghur-language-report-on-abuses-in-xinjiang\/","title":{"rendered":"UK PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE PUTS OUT UYGHUR-LANGUAGE REPORT ON ABUSES IN XINJIANG"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/uk-parliamentary-committee-07202021185349.html\">RFA<\/a>.&nbsp;20 July 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.uyghurcongress.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/unnamed-2021-07-23T162742.651.jpg?resize=193%2C108&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45041\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Below is an article published by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/uk-parliamentary-committee-07202021185349.html\">RFA.<\/a>&nbsp;Photo:AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A UK parliamentary report cataloguing human rights abuses in China\u2019s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) and calling for international action to halt atrocities has been published in the Uyghur language to support the embattled Turkic Muslim group, lawmakers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Monday\u2019s Uyghur-language version follows the July 8 release of \u201cNever Again: The UK\u2019s Responsibility to Act on Atrocities in Xinjiang and Beyond,\u201d by the cross-party Foreign Affairs Committee that targets abuses including arbitrary detentions, torture, and the use of forced Uyghur labor in the XUAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 39-page report calls the atrocities in Xinjiang \u201can international call to action,\u201d showing that \u201cpowerful actors are able to oppress people within their territory with impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Government should accept Parliament\u2019s view that Uyghurs and other ethnic minority groups in Xinjiang are suffering genocide and crimes against humanity, and take action to bring these crimes to an end,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report urges the UK government to pressure China to allow international observers access to Xinjiang, to lead efforts to create a coalition of democratic countries to drive U.N. and other international action on the XUAR, and to pursue coordinated sanctions on officials and entities responsible for the abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t speak for the UK government, but I hope very much that the government will read our report carefully and will take the actions that we all think are so necessary to defend the British people from being complicit by accident in some of the worst human rights violations of this century,\u201d said Tom Tugendhat, a British Conservative Party politician who has chaired the UK parliament\u2019s Foreign Affairs Committee since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Uyghur version of the policy paper was issued because \u201cwe thought it was important that the community we were talking about would have the possibility to read the report,\u201d he told RFA on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also recommends a partial boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, consideration of a ban on cotton products produced in the XUAR, and a legal requirement for businesses and public sector bodies to take measures to prevent and remove the use of forced labor in their supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough regulating the private sector by implementing stricter rules for businesses that may otherwise profit from forced labor, we can help prevent abuse,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy providing greater support and safeguards for Uyghur people and the preservation of their culture, we can protect them against acts which the House of Commons has stated constitute crimes against humanity and genocide,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK parliament determined that China\u2019s policies in the XUAR constitute genocide, as have other democratic legislatures in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Canada, the Netherlands, and Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, the U.S. government determined that serious rights abuses against Uyghurs in the region were part of a campaign of genocide, and in June, a German parliamentary committee declared that the abuses constitute crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has angrily rejected international scrutiny and criticism over Xinjiang, arguing that its policies are aimed at combating extremism and maintain stability in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RFA.&nbsp;20 July 2021 Below is an article published by&nbsp;RFA.&nbsp;Photo:AFP.
