Photo:AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) filed a criminal complaint in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-china-relationship-status-its-complicated\/a-57362540\">Germany<\/a>&nbsp;against five major retailers Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rights group alleges that companies including\u00a0Aldi, C&amp;A, Hugo Boss\u00a0and Lidl\u00a0benefited from forced Uyghur labor in China\u2019s Xinjiang region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The ECCHR said the complaint is the result of an open source investigation based on information that the five companies had listed \u201cpublicly and voluntarily\u201d identifying their suppliers in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe question is whether entertaining business relationships is not a way of aiding and abetting those international crimes,\u201d said&nbsp;Miriam Saage-Maass, the head of the ECCHR\u2019s Business and Human Rights Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;How have the German companies reacted?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Aldi Group said the rights group\u2019s claims were directed at the supplier Turpan Jinpin Knitting. The company said it had stopped purchasing items from this manufacturer at the end of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C&amp;A denied purchasing garments from any Xinjiang-based suppliers and said it had not sourced yarn or fabric from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hugo Boss likewise rejected the allegations and said its \u201cvalues and standards were adhered to in the production of our goods and that there are no violations of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Role of forced labor in global cotton supply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese cotton makes up about 20% of the global production of cotton. About 80% of that is produced in Xinjiang, where&nbsp;forced labor of Uyghurs is common&nbsp;in what China has denied are labor camps but instead insists are vocational training institutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has said such training is necessary to counter violent extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do believe that those five are really only an example of a much wider and more systematic problem,\u201d the ECCHR\u2019s Saage-Maass said, adding that \u201cit\u2019s very likely that there are many more companies sourcing from the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, the ECCHR said&nbsp;\u201cinternational law experts have qualified the treatment of Uyghurs in the region as amounting to crimes against humanity. Yet, European clothing brands and retailers source or have until recently sourced goods from companies in that region, according to the supplier lists they publish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While China has denied&nbsp;US allegations that the country is actively engaged in a genocide&nbsp;of its Uyghur population, brands such as&nbsp;Adidas, H&amp;M, Nike and Uniqlo announced they would no longer buy Xinjiang cotton last year, leading to boycott calls in China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DW.&nbsp;6 September 2021 Below is an article published by&nbsp;DW.
