The report outlines the most pressing concerns for the Uyghur population in China over the last five years and provides concrete recommendations for China and for the international community.

One year has passed since the we released our report, Seeking a Place to Breathe Freely: Current Challenges Faced by Uyghur Refugees & Asylum Seekers, that looked to present a detailed account of both the conditions on the ground in East Turkestan over the last few years as well as to document the perilous journeys made by Uyghurs who chose to flee China amid repression. In this updated report, we have notably added an Appendix detailing every case of Uyghur deportation to China from abroad since 1997.

The World Uyghur Congress has released a new report, Forced Labour in East Turkestan: State-Sanctioned Hashar System, detailing the continued use of forced labour among with Uyghur population in East Turkestan. China has been imposing forced labour on the Uyghur community primarily in the region’s southern prefectures, despite China officially abolishing the similar practice of “re-education through labour” back in November 2013.

The year 2015 continued the downward spiral in human rights protections for the Uyghur community living in East Turkestan (officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China) and abroad. Despite continued efforts from rights groups around the world working to bring to light issues that remain purposely obscured and largely overlooked by the international community, many of the rights that Uyghurs once held – one year ago, five years ago or ten years ago – are gradually being eroded. The report focuses on the most significant concerns that faced the Uyghur people in 2014, who continue to live under increasingly repressive state policies. In light of UNESCO’s International Mother Tongue Day, which took place on 21 February 2014, the World Uyghur Congress is publishing a report entitled ‘Movement for Uyghur Mother Language Based Education’ with the aim of raising awareness about the current linguistic injustices of China’s ‘bilingual’ educational policy. It underlines the importance of protecting minority language rights as a question of both Uyghur cultural preservation and improving inter-ethnic relations, as a strategy of maintaining peace and stability in East Turkestan.
