The World Uyghur Congress is releasing its annual report on the human rights situation in East Turkestan covering events of 2016. The report presents a detailed review of China’s actions in East Turkestan vis-à-vis the Uyghur population there and provides in-depth analysis of the most critical issues facing Uyghurs there.

The World Uyghur Congress has released a new report, Forced Labour in East Turkestan: State-Sanctioned Hashar System, detailing the continued use of forced labour among with Uyghur population in East Turkestan. China has been imposing forced labour on the Uyghur community primarily in the region’s southern prefectures, despite China officially abolishing the similar practice of “re-education through labour” back in November 2013.

World Uyghur Congress, 2 June 2016

Following extensive first hand research working directly with Uyghur refugees and asylum seekers who fled to Turkey from East Turkestan, the WUC has published a comprehensive report detailing current conditions in the region as well as the narratives of those whose escape lasted many months. The report, Seeking a Place to Breathe Freely: Current Challenges Faced by Uyghur Refugees & Asylum Seekers, offers a unique, first-hand glimpse into conditions seldom reported and scarcely heard by the international community until now.

World Uyghur Congress, 17 May 2015

The year 2015 continued the downward spiral in human rights protections for the Uyghur community living in East Turkestan (officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China) and abroad. Despite continued efforts from rights groups around the world working to bring to light issues that remain purposely obscured and largely overlooked by the international community, many of the rights that Uyghurs once held – one year ago, five years ago or ten years ago – are gradually being eroded. WUC & UHRP – Ahead of China’s review of its 5^th Periodic Report to the Committee Against Torture, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) and the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) have jointly submitted an alternative report for consideration by the Committee that aims to provide additional and alternative information  regarding the continued use of torture, particularly against Uyghur detainees in East Turkestan.

The World Uyghur Congress has just published its annual report on human rights violations in East Turkestan (Xinjiang), China, and can be read or downloaded here. The report focuses on the most significant concerns that faced the Uyghur people in 2014, who continue to live under increasingly repressive state policies. As 2014 has been a year of particular concern for human rights among Uyghurs, we have provided a detailed overview of abuses as well as some practical avenues for progress to reduce the heavy burden that has fallen on the Uyghur people.

In light of UNESCO’s International Mother Tongue Day, which took place on 21 February 2014, the World Uyghur Congress is publishing a report entitled ‘Movement for Uyghur Mother Language Based Education’ with the aim of raising awareness about the current linguistic injustices of China’s ‘bilingual’ educational policy. It underlines the importance of protecting minority language rights as a question of both Uyghur cultural preservation and improving inter-ethnic relations, as a strategy of maintaining peace and stability in East Turkestan.

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) is extremely concerned by an incident that happened on 23 April 2013 at approximately noon, in which 21 people were killed and 19 arrested (11 immediately after, with a further 8 six days later) at Serikbuya in Maralbeshi (Bucha) County in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
