The brothers of a Uyghur based in the Netherlands have been arrested by authorities in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region for contacting a sibling abroad deemed a “terrorist” during officially sanctioned phone calls, officials confirmed to RFA.

Vicky Xiuzhong Xu, 27, is a writer, researcher and stand-up comedian living in Australia. Her work has been instrumental in exposing the scale of China’s forced labor program in Xinjiang, where Uyghurs are corralled into heavily guarded compounds to work in factories under prison-like conditions. She became a key propaganda target for Chinese authorities, who have denounced her as a national traitor, after her research on human rights abuses was published by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI).

Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter doubled down on his denunciation of the Chinese government by posting a video drawing attention to the human rights abuses suffered by the Uyghur people and other Muslim minorities. Kanter extended his criticism to Middle East leaders and prominent Muslim athletes, including Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and former boxing champion Amir Khan, by equating their silence to complicity.
