In London, she has two restaurants devoted to Uyghur cuisine. Every month, she holds events there to celebrate the food, music and dances of her people – to ensure the preservation of their culture.

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), which its non-Han inhabitants prefer to call East Turkestan, is the most tightly surveilled area of China, yet the CCP feels it is not enough. From January 1, 2022, new “Regulations of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on the Construction of Public Safety” will come into force. They were adopted at the 28^th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 13^th People’s Congress of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on September 28, 2021, and published in the last month of October. An official commentary was published on October 13.

I was born in a Chinese reeducation camp, where my mother was detained in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which many Uyghurs call East Turkistan. For most of my life, I tried to forget the horrific experiences my mother and I had during my early childhood. But it seems the past is repeating itself and with a vengeance.

The European Commission’s proposed mandatory Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence laws and a forced labour ban are two powerful instruments that need to be executed effectively to successfully address Uyghur forced labour, write Koen Stoop and Helene de Rengerve.

As international pressure mounts on China to end its incarceration and mistreatment of millions of Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Turkic people in East Turkistan, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) will gather in Prague, Czech Republic, from November 12-14, 2021 for the world’s largest meeting of Uyghurs in the diaspora.

More than 200 Uyghur delegates from over 25 countries will gather in the Czech capital to elect the organization’s leadership for the next three years. Delegates to the 7th General Assembly will be joined by representatives from other communities, civil society, Parliament members and national governments, as well as leading academics and legal experts, to reflect on recent developments of the Uyghur genocide.

Vicky Xiuzhong Xu, 27, is a writer, researcher and stand-up comedian living in Australia. Her work has been instrumental in exposing the scale of China’s forced labor program in Xinjiang, where Uyghurs are corralled into heavily guarded compounds to work in factories under prison-like conditions. She became a key propaganda target for Chinese authorities, who have denounced her as a national traitor, after her research on human rights abuses was published by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI).
